I want to be able to sneak around in the woods silently. Some hunters can just glide but I still sound like a bull. Every year, I try to walk quieter and be more patient...
I took a magazine editing class in journalism school at the University of Oregon with fellow Oregonian Dwight Schuh, who went on to become the bowhunting editor at Outdoor Life and then editor of Bowhunter. Dwight was a very serious hunter, and a favorite trick was to carefully remove his boots and stalk within shooting distance wearing only his boot socks, which are about the quietest footwear imaginable, and you had to pay very close attention to where you put each foot lest you step on something really sharp.
We lost him to cancer six years ago. A fine man. https://www.bowhunter.com/editorial/the-last-stand-dwight-schuhs-final-buck/367818
