When the shooting ranges are closed, I don't just sit around doing nothing. If I can't get to the range and actually shoot, I try to keep my skills sharp in other ways. One thing I do is practice dry firing. It might sound kind of lame, just pulling the trigger on an unloaded gun but it helps with my trigger control and sight alignment. You can really focus on the fundamentals without the noise and recoil of live ammo. I spend a lot of time doing this..
Another thing I do is break out my air rifle. It's not quite the same as shooting my regular firearms, but it lets me work on my aiming and breathing techniques, and it's way cheaper than buying ammo, and I can do it in my backyard! It is also really fun way to get the kids involved. We compete on who can hit the target the most. I try to treat it as an opportunity to refine the mental game. When the chance comes around again to hit the range, I want to have a good understanding of the things to do. It gets me so pumped when I finally go back.
