Finally got to the range with this new-to-me Uberti Model 1873 sporting rifle in .44-40 along with a box of handloads. The 25-yard target was sensational; the 50-yard not so much. I am rusty, and the trigger needs to be brought down to a consistent 3 pounds from 5-6. Plinking offhand at the 200-yard berm at the Grant County Shooting range, I needed just a few inches of elevation to hit my target. I follow Bryan Austin aka Savvy Jack aka ChasingThe44WCF on Youtube and on his Website.
The load I used was based on Bryan's suggestion: 200-grain cast lead Montana Bullet Works flat point lubed with SPG of 25.0 grains Re 7 in Starline brass with WLP primer. Estimated velocity 1200 fps. I was using a six-o'clock hold at the bottom of the bull. Once you shoot an 1873, you kinda get spoiled.
