For about six months, I was convinced my ammo was the problem. The rifle was running but not quite right. Extraction felt more violent than it should have, brass was ending up in places that seemed a little excessive and every now and then I'd get a hiccup that sent me right back to blaming whatever load I happened to be shooting that day.
So naturally, I did what a lot of shooters do. I spent way too much time analyzing ammo. Someone later asked me id I have looked at the gas system question and I realized I hadn't looked at it nearly enough. After some testing, I adjusted the gas block and dialed it back about a half turn and the difference was immediate. The rifle shot softer, the brass stopped launching itself into the next zip code and the whole gun felt smoother and more predictable.
Most importantly, the issues I'd been blaming on ammunition suddenly disappeared. ARs are systems and when something feels off, it's easy to focus on the most obvious variable. Ammo gets blamed for a lot because it's the thing we change most often but sometimes the real issue is hiding elsewhere.
In my case, I spent half a year pointing a finger at the wrong suspect and the rifle wasn't telling me it hated the ammo. It was telling me it wanted less gas. I just wasn't listening.
