The guy at the range with the $3,000 scope and zero fundamentals was outshooting exactly nobody. Glass is a multiplier, it multiplies what you already are..

Exactly, glass doesn’t make you a marksman, it just magnifies the good… and the bad.

No Nightforce scopes in my future, much as I would love to afford one. Sometimes you can find value in used glass. I was in a local gun shop browsing a display case full of scopes and other odds and ends gathering dust when my eyes lit upon an old Tasco 6--18X variable scope. Everything seemed to be working fine and the glass was wonderfully clear -- no surprise because this one one of the earlier Tascos still made in Japan, with Japanese lenses. I happily paid $50 for it and it now sits on my very accurate Tikka T1X .22.

If youre just shooting a couple hundred yds, its not that big a deal but when you reach a certain level of proficency glass does make a difference, especially at longer ranges. I've shot to a mile and it does improve your ability to make accurate shots. Like most things there is point of diminishing return.
I have a Leupold Mark 5 7 x35 on my custom 6.5 and it will likely go on my 7PRC when its finished. Its a $2600 scope but you can find them on the used market for >$2000. Before that I had a Zeiss 6x36 in the same price range, beautiful scope but a bit finicky. On my lower $$$ rifles I've found a true budget bargain, the DNT TOR. 7x35x56 that retails for $600. Honestly, it hard to tell the difference between that and the Loopy. Unless your a top cometitor, the DNT is a true no brainer.
